Thompson and Sorensen Combined to Lift Mocs to 13-9 Win

March 24, 2012 - Mat Thompson and Dane Sorensen combined for nine goals as Florida Southern defeated Belmont Abbey 13-9 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field in Belmont, N.C. With the win the Moccasins even their record at 5-5, while the Crusaders fall to 3-6.

The Moccasins struck first as Sorensen’s shot found the back of the cage to give the Mocs a 1-0 lead. Belmont Abbey scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead with 4:59 remaining. Just over a minute later Kevin Naslonski’s goal evened the score 2-2 after the first period.

Two minutes into the second quarter Shane Tompkins connected with Thompson for a goal that gave the Mocs a 3-2 lead. An unassisted goal by Larry Gress extended the Mocs’ lead to 4-2. Sorensen and Kyle Plaugher scored back-to-back goals to give the Mocs a 6-2 advantage. Ryan Corrigan’s goal cut the lead to 6-3 at the half.

Belmont Abbey came out strong in the second half, scoring back-to-back goals that cut FSC’s lead to 6-5. The Moccasins responded with four unanswered goals, including three from Thompson, to extend the lead to 10-5. After a Crusaders goal, A.J. Monteleone found Shane Tompkins for a goal to give the Mocs an 11-6 lead after three quarters.

Dan Morrissey’s goal 13 seconds into the fourth quarter cut the lead to 11-7, but the Mocs responded 30 seconds later, as Wes Venturino passed to Thompson for his fifth goal of the season, which ties his season high that he set against Catawba.  Belmont Abbey scored back-to-back goals, before Ricky DeMicco connected with Sorensen for the 13-9 final. The game was called with 1:14 left due to lightning in the area.

Thompson led the Moccasins with five goals, while Sorensen netted four. Tompkins finished the game with one goal and two assists.

Dan Krispinsky went 18-25 on face-offs and picked up a team high eight ground balls. DJ Lubs and Sam Penizotto each had two caused turnovers. Andrew Almansberger finished with 11 saves in the contest.

The marks the first time in the program’s four-year history that the Mocs have won back-to-back road games.

The Moccasins return to action Saturday when they host Coker at Bryant Stadium. Game time is 3 p.m.
