Beauvais charged with first-degree murder

Tues. March 20, 2012 – A 31-year-old man from Kahnawake is facing first-degree murder charges in relation to the death of a 56-year-old local man. Derek Beauvais appeared in Longueuil Court this afternoon and was formally charged with first-degree murder.

The murder occurred on Route 207 between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Monday night. The Peacekeepers called in the Surete du Quebec’s Major Crime Unit to assist in the investigation. Police investigators spent the morning interviewing the suspect.

Under the Criminal Code of Canada, first-degree murder is defined as planned and deliberate and is punishable with 25 years in prison.

Police are releasing few details of the crime at this point in time. Both Peacekeepers and the SQ stated that the suspect and the victim were acquaintances. Police are describing the crime as a violent death that may have been the result of an argument that turned violent.

Beauvais remains in custody.
