A Voice from the Eastern Door

Student Submission

The following was sent by Salmon River Middle School teacher Lindsay LaSala. Her sixth grade students worked on persuasive letters. Students chose a topic that was important to them and through writing and a poster, hoped to persuade readers to help make a difference.

Next week – Save Animals From Abuse

Dear Editor,

Hey you! Stop thinking that the Earth is your huge trash can! The Earth should be beautiful, with grassy fields and tall shadowy trees, but you are making that ugly by throwing candy bar wrappers on the ground. Not recycling and leaving rusty, old, broken down trucks and cars on the sides of rivers and in junkyards and your lawns adds to making our Earth ugly and polluted.

The solution I came up with is we can all recycle and take the plastic and trash out of the ocean and Earth to help the wildlife.

There is too much pollution on the ground and in the air. Animals are dying because they think plastic bags are other animals. Cars are being used way too much and it’s killing our air that we breathe.

More solutions with research are from The Petersburg Times in Florida said, the people in Gulfport were cleaning up. They found 90 to 95% of the litter was cigarette butts and the fine for the littering law is now $143 instead of $93. I read an article from the Washington Times that said we are spending too much money on bag taxes and that doesn’t stop people from using plastic bags.

My conclusion is if we all come together and clean up the world, we can make this world a better place for us.

Thanks for taking your time to listen to me about the problem of littering.

Sincerely,

Mose McDonald
