The Red Raider Girls Hockey Team was led by eighth grader goalie, Maddy Dillabough, as they shut out the Purple Ghosts of Alexandria Bay, 2-0. Dillabough earned her first high school girl’s hockey shut out performance turning back 24 shots at the Massena Arena. The win puts the Lady Raiders record at 5-5-1 overall and 2-3 in Section 10.
Senior Laura Gonzalez scored the only goal in the first period off an assist by sophomore Shannon Casey with only eight seconds left in the period. The second period ended scoreless and it looked as if the third was going to end the same. With 1:47 left Kawe Francis-Herne found the back of the Purple Ghosts’ net assisted by Gonzalez to seal the win.
The Lady Raiders had a busy weekend playing a non-league game on Friday and a league game on Saturday. On Friday night The Lady Lakers from Skaneateles were in town to take on the Lady Raiders.
Skaneateles scored the first goal at 8:07 in the first period and held the lead until late in the second period when Carlie Leary scored from Bailey Dillabough and Shaydi Oakes at the 10:21 mark. The Lakers answered back less than three minutes later with their second goal. It only took Massena 62 seconds to rallied back when Kawe Francis-Herne connected from Laura Gonzalez.
The third period saw the Lady Raiders take the lead for the first time as Gonzalez broke through to score an unassisted goal at 4:04. With 5:44 left in the game, the Lakers rallied to score the equalizing goal to put the game into overtime.
The game ended with a tied score of 3-3. Megan Hans worked the crease for Massena with 24 stops while the Lakers had 26 saves.
On Saturday the Lady Raiders traveled to Potsdam to play the undefeated Lady Sandstoners (10-0 overall, 6-0 Section 10). The Sandstoners shut out Massena 5-0 in a league game.
Maddie Dillabough and Megan Hans shared goaltending duties and had 22 saves between the two of them for the Lady Raiders (5-7-1 overall, 4-5-1 Section 10).
