AKWESASNE – After fighting a courageous battle with cancer, Mr. Louis W. Lazore, age 64, of 1734 River Road, peacefully passed away Friday afternoon, January 6, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Louis was born December 25, 1947 in Akwesasne the son of the late Annie Lazore. He attended schools in Akwesasne and took welding and carpentry courses at St. Lawrence College. He also received his cable technician diploma. On December 30, 1967, he married Phyllis M. Adams at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, SJ, officiating. Phyllis predeceased him on November 20, 2008.
Louis once worked for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, and owned and operated his construction and carpentry business, L&L Construction for over 20 years. Louis was also the Snye District Chief with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne for many years. After entering the political scene, he was instrumental in securing funds for the Hogansburg/Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department in order to purchase new trucks and rescue boat. He was an exempt member of the Hogansburg/Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department and a strong advocate of the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group. Louis enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends, especially his coffee shop buddies. He was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leaf and enjoyed fishing and being on the river in his boat. Louis also enjoyed playing cards, doing woodworking, and watching lacrosse.
He will be sadly missed by his three daughters, Priscilla “Bulla” and Joe Herne, Stephanie and Bryan Cole, and Tanya and Jay Square, his two chosen sons, Ryan Adams and Mike Mitchell, all of Akwesasne; his 4 grandchildren, Tanner Jock, Dakota, Taronhiorens, and Mara Lazore; his chosen grandchildren, Kloey, Heather, Amanda, Keith, Emberly, Bridget, and Korie Herne; Cassandra and Lalen Phillips; Ronan and Sammi Oakes; Donovan Lauzon; and Guinevere Benedict; and his beloved cat, Sid.
He will also be missed by his sisters, Clara Benedict, Elizabeth and Maurice Thompson and Delsie and Russell Hall, all of Akwesasne; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Edith McDonald, Trudy Ann Lauzon, Emily and Harold Lauzon, Vicky and Craig Jock; Larry Leaf and Ann Phillips, Roy and Joellene Adams, Jake and Karen Adams, Angus and Veronica Adams, Sally Ann Adams, and Abram Gray, Sr .; and countless nieces and nephews.
Louis was predeceased by his son, Louis W. “JomBay” Lazore, Jr. on March 3, 2006; a chosen grandson, Cory J. Herne on August 7, 2008; and his brother, Gary Thompson on December 8, 2002.
Friends called at his home beginning Monday, January 9, 2012 until a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating. Following cremation, burial will be in Kateri Cemetery.
