A Voice from the Eastern Door

Final PISToLS Investigation Complete A look into Akwesasne's Communication Building

This is the third and final investigation done by the volunteer paranormal group who investigated the two homes as part of Indian Times Haunted Happenings Series in October 2011. This investigation required an additional session to complete the report and the following is the first part of a two-part series. Next week will be the final session during the first investigation, the report of the second investigation, and the conclusion from the team. To date the audio recordings and reports have been shared with the staff of both 97.3 CKON Radio and Indian Time Newspaper.

It was a twist of fate that brought the Co-Founder of the Paranormal Investigations St. Lawrence Seaway (PISToLS) to Akwesasne’s Communication Building, which currently houses both 97.3 CKON Radio and Indian Time Newspaper. Lana Putnam, who in addition to being the Co-Founder is also an Investigator with the group, struck up a conversation with a fellow attendee at a little known dog trainer’s home at the end of one class. After exchanging contact information with a worker at Indian Time, multiple investigations were about to be launched as PISToLS would begin their first foray into the Akwesasne territory.

Having completed two investigations at a residence in the districts of Kawehno:ke and Tsi Snaihne, the team was in full force as they drove into Kana:takon to tackle their biggest investigation of the series. PISToLS Team Leader/Investigator Tom “Bones” Questel, Lana “Tig” Putnam, Amie Merrill and Alyania Rule all made the trip from Potsdam to conduct their investigation on a Friday night.

In general the group tends to go into the investigation prepared for anything and show respect to all those that they encounter in the course of the night. This is done with a sense of humor as they setup their equipment placing night vision video camera’s to record in different rooms of the building, and preparing their other instruments to be used to do initial readings around the building to set a baseline.

Session 1 Results – Lana and Alyania

Once they were ready to go the team split up into two groups with Lana and Alyania going upstairs into CKON’s broadcasting area. The equipment that they used included a flashlight to communicate with that turns on/off by twisting the head, Mel meters for EMF and ambient temperature readings, a wide angle temperature meter and two different digital audio recorders along with one of the DVR cameras being setup in the hallway.

While they were setting up their equipment the playback of their audio revealed two comments before they even started the session. The first was a voice saying, “best not knowing,” and then, “we may appear.” Shortly after while they were just finishing setting up their flashlight was turned on by itself, and they settled in to begin their first session.

“Will you turn off the light if you are male?” asked the investigators, the light turned off immediately.

“Turn it on if you are from another Native tribe besides Mohawk,” asked the investigators, the light turned back on.

“What tribe are you from?” The audio tape revealed indistinguishable whispers.

“Were you part of the wars fought here?” asked the investigators referring to the War of 1812, the light turned back on.

“Were you a Shaman?” asked the investigators, the audio revealed more indistinguishable whispers.

“Were you a young warrior?” asked the investigators, the light turned on brightly.

“Were you from near Montreal, Samuel De Champlain’s settlement?” asked the investigators, the light turned on brightly again.

When reviewing the audio files the investigators noticed that there were a few electric sounding spikes that could be attributed to being at the radio station due to all of the broadcasting equipment. It is also a great place for spirits to collect energy to use for communicating also.

While trying to get the spirits to interact by touching the Mel meter they caught a voice on their audio recorders asking, “How?”

“Can you turn the flashlight up for me?” asked the investigators who will sometimes ask for it to be turned up or down slowly. On the recording they caught a voice saying, “Yes…yes…yes…” as it complied.

“Were you involved in the battle on this land?” asked the investigators, the light turned on again.

At this point in the investigation both Lana and Alyania thought that they had heard a noise sounding like thunder. The sound seemed to come from one of the adjacent rooms, but there was no storm that night. They did catch the sound on their digital audio recorders. In another clip of the audio they heard what sounded like drumming and singing.

While the investigators were talking to each other candidly during the session, Lana said, “…you can do that…” during the review of the audio they heard a male voice ask, “What?” The next voice that they caught on their audio recorders said, “The light.”

Towards the end of the first session with Lana and Alyania they were asking the spirits to change the temperature in the room. Lana coaxingly said, “come on,” and a male voice responded with, “here I come!”

The investigators enjoyed the sense of humor that the spirits seemed to reveal.

Session 2 Results – Lana & Amie

Lana and Amie made their way to the top floor on the Indian Time side of the building. They noted that where the electric cable runs to the building there is a high reading of EMF registering a peak of 182 before it shut the meter down. The ambient temperature in the room was 73.7 as they setup in the main open area of the room. In addition to their audio recorders, flashlight and Mel meter, they also had their K2 meter with them. They placed the K2 meter on a location that had a flat reading.

“Why are you here?” asked the investigators, the K2 meter had a spike of activity. The flashlight then began to turn on by itself without any prompts with questions being asked. Lana and Aimee notice a shadow moving down the hallways towards the offices of the Editor and Advertising/Sales office. The K2 meter jumped up to 20 milgus, then hovered at 15 milgus for a few seconds then the temperature dropped 2 degrees.

“Can you make any kind of noise for us at all?” asked the investigators, behind the tick tock of the clocks in the room they heard a voice say, “Repeat?”

The temperature began rising several degrees with the highest recording at 78F when another voice is heard saying something sounding like, “come to.”

As the ambient temperature began to drop back down the investigators asked if they could drop the temp down to 69F. The temperature reading began to move and Amie called out her temperature readings, “72… 71… 70… 69… 68… 67.4… 67.1…” The air in the room felt cool at that point and despite asking if they could bring the temperature back up it continued to fall. “65… 64… 63… 62.8… 61.9…60.5…58…56…” said Amie as she continued to call out the readings she was getting. Using another temperature gauge with the laser thermometer they registered another reading 4-feet away from where Amie was standing and it indicated 71.9 as Amie continued to call out her readings, “54… 53…52.2…”

Lana used the laser thermometer to take a temperature reading at the end of the Mel meter and it registered at 50.3F. Amie continued to call out her readings reaching as low as 39.2F with the floor registering at 70F. Finally they decided to turn the Mel meter off and back on again to see what would happen, and as they did that they caught a voice on their audio recording saying, “how sweet.”

“Ok, that is enough…” said Lana and shortly after they hear a voice say, “Nuff” as though it were mocking her. At that point their K2 also has another spike of activity.

After turning the Mel meter back on it starts with a typical temperature reading before it drops back down to 47.3F. Lana and Amie both had cold chills at that point, although the floor temperature was only reading 72F. They had several voices caught on their audio recorders at the same time that both investigators were talking, which made it hard to understand what was being said.

They did capture a male voice saying, “it is sicker,” said both investigators discussed their camera. They also captured a male voice saying, “laughing for them.” At this point their batteries began to drain, which they had just put in fresh at the start of the session.

“We had fun and hope you spoke into our recorders,” said Lana as they were getting ready to end the session. At that point they could faintly hear a string of words behind them talking as they packed up; the only thing they could discern was that it was a male voice.

To be continued…
