A Voice from the Eastern Door
Akwesasne Wolves join ICEd PINK program to raise funds for breast cancer research
By registering for the program, teams pledge their time, energy and a portion of all proceeds raised to CBCF-Ontario and its vision of creating a future without breast cancer - a disease with which 1 in 9 Canadian women will be diagnosed in her lifetime.
Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Canadian Women’s Hockey Team Captain, analyst on TSN and CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, and ICEd PINK’s honorary spokesperson says, “I’m so proud to be the honorary spokesperson for ICEd PINK. As the former captain of Team Canada’s Women’s Olympic team, I’m passionate about hockey. As a woman, I’m passionate about finding a way to help create a future without breast cancer. It’s exciting to sharpen my skates for this cause - I’m thrilled that hockey can help make a difference.”
In exchange for their commitment to raise funds through the program, CBCF-Ontario supplies all participating teams with an ICEd PINK game day toolkit, which ensures that each one is ready to host a successful event.
Participation in the ICEd PINK program also holds the promise of benefitting the teams themselves. A team can opt to purchase the Foundation’s popular pink skate pins to be sold for $5.00 each, with 60% of proceeds going to CBCF-Ontario and 40% going to the team itself. For many teams, this could make a significant impact in terms of training and equipment improvements.
Motivated by the increasing rate of breast cancer diagnosis among Ontario’s First Nations women, Gloria Thompson, President of the Akwesasne Wolves, and her St. Lawrence division Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League team went to work for the cause. The 16-21 year-old players who hail from the surrounding Cornwall area will be hosting their first ICEd PINK game event on October 29th, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. They will be facing off against the Westport Rideaus at A’nowara’ko:wa Arena, located at 36 Arena Road, Akwesasne (Cornwall Island), Ontario.
Says Thompson, “Our community has shown our team so much support over the years. Now we want to give back and show our support for all of the families whose mothers and aunts were lost to breast cancer by raising awareness of this disease.”
The Akwesasne Wolves will be sporting pink skate laces and pink hockey tape on their sticks for game day. Coaches will don pink on their uniforms, pink t-shirt contests will take place between periods, pink ribbons will be distributed to fans, and pink candy will be available for all to enjoy.

About the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - Ontario Region
2011 marks the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s 25th anniversary. Founded in 1986, a small but determined group of women and men decided to put a stake in the ground and establish the first volunteer-led grassroots organization in Canada devoted exclusively to breast cancer research, health promotion and advocacy. Our mission is to create a future without breast cancer through reducing the number of people diagnosed, reducing mortality from breast cancer, and improving quality of life for those affected. We direct donor dollars to world-class researchers and clinicians who are making groundbreaking progress in breast cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care. Since 1986, the Foundation’s Ontario Region has awarded over $84 million in funding for nearly 600 grants, supporting research projects and fellowships.
