Pauline A. Gray

AKWESASNE – Mrs. Pauline A. Gray, age 61, of 1109 Drum Street Road, unexpectedly passed away early Wednesday morning, October 26, 2011 at Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital in Plattsburgh.

Pauline was born April 10, 1950 in Cornwall, Ontario, the daughter of the late Richard and Margaret Cook Johnson. She attended Cornwall Collegiate Vocational School and also Mater Dei College. She later received her cooking degree at St. Lawrence College. On June 19, 1976, she married George G. Gray in Hogansburg with Justice Jerome Brockway, officiating.

Pauline first worked for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe as a Heath Care Aide. She later went to work for the Home for the Aged in St. Regis before going work for as a cook at the Partridge House until her retirement in 1999. She was a communicant of the St. Regis Catholic Church and was active in the Healthy Heart Program. Pauline enjoyed taking pictures, talking on the telephone, writing poetry, sharing her wisdom or spending time with her grandchildren. She was always praying for others.

Pauline is survived by her husband, George; five children, Madeline Johnson, Beatrice Johnson and her companion, Bruce Tarbell, Rachel Jacobs and her husband, Michael, Francine Gray and her companion Noah King, and Helen Gray, all of Akwesasne; 21 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; four sisters, Elizabeth Johnson, Patricia Johnson, Josephine Herne and her husband, Reginald, and Sandra Thompson and her husband Lonnie; two brothers, Tom Johnson ”Mr. Baseball” and his wife, Linda, and Howard Johnson, all of Akwesasne; and many nieces and nephews.

Pauline was predeceased by a son, George Gregory Gray Jr .; a grandson, George Mark King; two brothers, Lawrence and Paul Johnson; and a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Raymond Cook.

Friends may call at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Michael Jacobs, 49 Mose Cook Road, Akwesasne, beginning 5:00 PM Thursday until 9:30 AM, Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, 10:30 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating.
