A Voice from the Eastern Door

Recruitment Fair- Fall 2011

Since opening in April 2009, the Akwesasne Employment Resource Center (AERC) has held 3 Recruitment Fairs with its fourth Recruitment Fair recently held on October 6th, 2011. Connecting employers with job seekers is one of the main goals of the AERC and by offering this service to employers, we are able to connect, promote and encourage suitable candidates to meet with potential employers seeking out positions in various industries.

This year, we had four employers attend our event: Ryno Rebar, Running Deer Construction, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Ohwistha Capital Corporation.

Ryno Rebar, a Construction Company based in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is currently working on a Project with Detour Gold Mines located north of Timmins, Ontario. They attended our Recruitment Fair seeking experienced Rodbusters to fill positions in the Northern Ontario camp.

A local Construction Company, Running Deer Construction, participated in the event looking for various construction workers. They had an immediate need to fill certain positions, including drywall and Heavy Equipment Operators. With upcoming projects, Running Deer felt the need to recruit and fill their pool with qualified candidates in various areas, including drivers and laborers.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) recently hired an Aboriginal Liaison Officer (James Marchand), who currently works with the community providing outreach and information services about the CBSA. They spoke of the many different career opportunities, the recruitment process and also the potential of hiring a qualified local individual to be trained and work for CBSA. One participant commented, “James gave great insight in the many different career opportunities that are possible working in the CBSA such as Human Resources, Immigration, Nexus Marine and Highway – Land Border Office”.

Ohwistha Capital Corporation attended to recruit candidates for a Business Services Officer position. Charmaine Caldwell spoke with a few individuals about the position and the company itself.

Along with hosting Recruitment Fairs, the AERC organized and coordinated the 1st Akwesasne International Job Fair that was held in March 2011 at the Mohawk Bingo Palace. Over 40 employers attended this event with over 1100 individuals walking through the doors. A second Job Fair will be held in March 2012 (event date and location not yet determined) and it is anticipated that it will be just as successful as the first one.
