A Voice from the Eastern Door
CLEAN UP:
1. Choose a well-ventilated area to clean the battery leakage so you aren’t harmed by inhaling any fumes. A garage with the door open, a room with several open windows, or outside on a picnic table are all places to clean up a battery leakage.
2 Put on your rubber gloves and protective eyewear.
3. Determine whether the batteries that have leaked are alkaline or acid. Use vinegar or lemon juice to clean an alkaline battery leakage; use baking soda to clean an acid battery leakage.
4 Use a toothbrush or cotton swap to help remove the battery leakage. A toothbrush is probably best for a leakage that is really stubborn, especially if it is an acid battery leakage that will be cleaned with baking soda, because there isn’t any liquid to loosen the leakage in the battery compartment. Cotton swabs work well for cleaning lemon juice or vinegar.
5 Stick to the same brand of batteries when you put new batteries in your electronic device so you can avoid a battery leakage that has both alkaline .
ON CARPETS & FLOORS
1. Using rubber gloves carefully remove leaking battery and dispose of according to local regulations. Do not dispose of batteries leaking or otherwise in regular trash, these are considered hazardous items.
2. sprinkle a generous portion of baking soda over the area that contains the battery acid. This will neutralize the acid and prevent further damage to the area.
3. If the area where the battery acid spilled is a fabric you can pour some 7-up over the area and add more baking soda. Let sit for 20-30 minutes. Do not do this step with electronics!!! This instruction is for fabrics or cement floors only!
4. Using stiff brush scrub area, Add more baking soda as needed. Use old rag or paper towels to wipe baking soda off/out of area to be cleaned making sure you are wearing rubber gloves
5. For carpets you will pat dry the area thoroughly and then add more 7up and Baking soda to neutralize as much acid as possible then using dry towels pat dry, repeat twice with 7up and baking soda patting dry each time. Once dry vacuum thoroughly and follow with Carpet shampoo taking care to follow directions on label. If you are lucky and were fast on the clean up there shouldn’t be too much damage.
6. For cement floors do several washings with 7 up and baking soda taking care to really scrub it in with stiff broom or rubber brush. followed with a good rinse and final washing with a good quality cement cleaner.
PREVENT BATTERIES FROM CORRODING
1. Remove the connections from your vehicle’s battery, starting with the grounded terminal. Move the connections aside so that they do not touch the battery while working. If your connections tend to move towards the battery while working, a little bit of masking tape holds them against a safe surface.
2 Place a small bead of silicone sealer at the bottom of one of the battery terminal posts. Smear the sealer so that sealer covers all 360 degrees of the intersection of the post and the battery.
3 Slide a felt battery washer down the battery post and press it firmly against the sealer, so that the sealer connects the battery post to the battery.
4 Coat the felt battery washer with petroleum jelly.
5 Repeat Steps two through five for the other battery terminal post.
6. Coat both connection cable ends--the exposed metal--with petroleum jelly and reconnect the battery. Make sure to tighten the connections so they do not slide off while operating the vehicle.
