Salmon River Shamrocks Halt the Lady Raiders

The Salmon River Central girls varsity soccer team hosted the Lady Raiders last Thursday in an NAC interdivisional game between the two undefeated teams. The Lady Shamrocks retained the undefeated honor with a 3-2 win.

The Lady Shamrocks took the lead early when Anna Kelly converted from Karley Cree seven minutes into the game. Massena rallied back to pull even 28 minutes later when Dominique Valancius finished off a play from Kayleigh Zappia. The teams stood tied at half time.

Five minutes into the second half Valancius broke through for Massena with an unassisted goal to put the Lady Raiders ahead. Salmon battled back and with 11 minutes left in regulation time, Cree struck unassisted for the equalizer. With 57 seconds left, Abby Kelly fired a shot into the top of the Massena net from 35 yards after connecting with a pass from Karyss Terrance.

Amanda Reyome fielded 12 shots working the crease for a while for the Shamrock (5-0-1) win. Courtney Manley handled 13 saves for the Raider(2-1-2) effort.

“It was very disappointing considering how well I thought we played,” commented Massena coach Ryan Hayes. “I thought we controlled the play for most of the game. Salmon River took full advantage of their restarts, scoring nice goals off a corner and a free kick at the top of the box. They are very dangerous from long distances as well. They are a good team and we look forward to playing them in a few weeks at home”.

Salmon River played again this past Monday against the St. Lawrence Central Larries and won by a score of 3-1. Salmon River is currently at the top of the North Division within Section X, carrying a 3-0 record in league play. Non-league statistics have them at 3-0-1, with their tie against Potsdam in a pre-season game.

The Massena Lady Raiders played against Potsdam in league play on Monday as well, and came away with the victory by a score of 2-0. Massena’s record is currently 1-0-1 in league play, and 2-1-1 in non-league play. The Lady Raiders are now ranked second in the Central Division within Section X Girls Varsity Soccer.
