This little football star left the Massena Red players scrambling to try and catch him as he scored a touchdown.
History was made last Saturday morning as the Akwesasne Eagles Youth Flag Football Teams took to their home field at Generations Park for the first time ever. The Akwesasne Eagles faced off against the Massena Red teams with the age of students on each team ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 2. Team founders are Tsiorasa Barreiro, Rasennes Pembleton and Pamela Pembleton, with the original plan to have only one team but after the overwhelming response of interest there were enough players to outfit two teams this season.
For the first game on Saturday Fire Swamp started off running an 80-yard touchdown on the very first carry of the game, and the first carry in team history. Team 1 defeated Massena Red 35-21 and that same day Team 2 defeated Massena Blue 49-7. Roman Jacobs had two touchdowns to lead a balanced offence. Bronson Mason and Logan Lebehn also scored.
Both Teams were in action again this past Tuesday in Malone. Eagles Team 1 defeated Malone 1 on a score of 56-7 with great play all around from the team. Game highlights were Watsi Silver rumbling 60 yards for a touchdown and Dayne Thomas beating the defense to the corner of the end zone on a beautifully executed quarterback keeper. Eagles team 2 also defeated Malone 2 on a score of 42-7. Bleyton Hopps-Thompson broke through for his first touchdown.
The team received sponsorships from Akwaks Smokeshop and the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Community Fund. The funds allowed the team to purchase high quality game flags, leather footballs, team equipment bags, practice cones and other equipment.
The Akwesasne Eagles have a big game this Saturday September 17 at Generations Field beginning at 10:00am. The Akwesasne Eagles Team 1 & 2 will play each other for local bragging rights. The entire community is invited to attend and cheer on the kids.
Akwesasne Eagles Team 1 will be hosting Tri-Town Tuesday night September 20 at 6:00pm. Both teams will participate in the Malone Mustangs Tournament on September 24th and 25th. Akwesasne will host their first tournament on October 15th and 16th at Generations Field. The community is invited and encouraged to attend any or all of these games.
