A Voice from the Eastern Door
The weather was hot with a cool breeze off the St. Lawrence River this weekend to keep dancers cooled off as they waited for their turn to compete in the 2011 Akwesasne International Powwow. Spectators traveled from near and far to watch the Grand Entry take place on Saturday with the dancers following the honor guard onto the dance arena at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena grounds on Kawehno:ke.
Vendors were setup to showcase their wares to the visitors who were only too happy to leave with the different crafts. The smell of traditional powwow food beckoned those who had been waiting all year for an Indian Taco or fry bread.
As dancers flooded the floor to battle in heats against their competition, the host drum Smoke Trail played throughout the afternoon. Great entertainment was provided to those who came out to watch the show, the following is the list of winners provided by the powwow organizing committee:
