Henry S. Smoke

HOGANSBURG- Henry S. Smoke, age 79, of 33 Smoke Road, Hogansburg, NY, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Tsiionkwanonhsote, Cornwall Island Long Term Care Facility at 7:55 PM, surrounded by his loving family. He had been a patient at the nursing home since 2004.

Henry was born September 3, 1931 in Hogansburg, the son of the late Abraham and Margaret Adams Smoke. He attended the Mohawk Schools. Henry was first married to Louise Benedict Mitchell who predeceased him. He and Harriet Arquette were together for twenty-five happy years. After Harriet’s death he married Gladys Mitchell which ended in divorce.

Henry worked in Syracuse for twenty seven years as a laborer for Dick Viau Company with local #40. Upon returning to the reservation he worked for the Mohawk Tribe for ten years. His last employment was for the state prison in Malone. Henry enjoyed watching wrestling, playing bingo, working in his garden and general outside work. He loved being around his family and was a member of the St. Regis Catholic Church.

Surviving Henry is his brother, Louis Smoke and his wife Ruth of Hogansburg .; an adopted daughter, Rita Terrance of Hogansburg; many nieces and nephews including Nancy and Louis Phillips of Akwesasne and Pete and Grace Mitchell of Akwesasne. Also surviving Henry is his loving companion at the nursing home for the past eleven years, Margorie Lazore.

Henry was predeceased by two sisters, Christie Mitchell on June 12, 1985 and Elizabeth Smoke on August 27, 1994; and three brothers, Joseph H. Smoke on August 25, 2002, Alex Smoke on July 3, 1977 and Mitchell Smoke in October 1955.

Family and friends called at the Homemakers, River Road, Snye, Quebec, starting Sunday, August 28, 2011 until funeral services on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jack Downs. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hogansburg.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Homemakers Association in Snye, Quebec.
