A Voice from the Eastern Door

Wellness Day 2011

Wellness Day was held last Thursday, August 25 at Generations Field in Akwesasne. Information booths were set up underneath tents to provide an opportunity for Akwesasronon to learn new ways to improve their health and wellbeing through the many different programs currently operating throughout the territory. Despite the on-again off-again rain throughout the day, the event continued on for those dedicated enough to stop in.

Booths ranged from Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Programs like the Foster Care Program and Intensive Preventive Program along with Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Community Health and Outreach programs. Smiling faces abounded as people reconnected to those they haven’t seen since last year’s event which was held at the Mohawk International Raceway.

Wellness Day originally began as a way for elders in the community of Akwesasne to learn about the different programs and services available to them. Since that time the event has expanded to a broader audience. For more information on Tribal Health Programs contact the Indian Health Services building at 518-358-3141.
