A Voice from the Eastern Door
Students, proud parents and sponsors gathered at St. Regis Recreation in Kana:takon on Tuesday to distribute bursary awards to deserving students who are furthering their education at various post-secondary institutions.
Kawehno:ke District Chief Abram Benedict welcomed students, parents and sponsors. Chief Benedict recognized the high school students for their hard work and encouraged them to come back and help build our community. Also in attendance were Kana:takon District Chief Larry King, Kawehno:ke District Chief Wesley Benedict, Kana:takon District Chief Julie Phillips-Jacobs, and Kawehno:ke District Chief Brian David.
Sheree Bonaparte, Executive Director of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne congratulated students and parents for their hard work and achievements to date. Bonaparte thanked sponsors Bank of Montreal and Enbridge. She also spoke on the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education’s commitment to students.
Stephen Fay from the Bank of Montreal spoke on National Aboriginal Banking and giving back to the community. Stephen and Gina Jones-Thompson presented students with awards during the ceremony.
Enbridge representative Peter Valiquet spoke on the importance of education in careers before presenting awards.
Recipient of the Akwesasne Powwow Committee had to write an essay for the bursary. Chief Larry King spoke about the challenges in education and the importance of the Akwesasne Powwow, acknowledging the sponsors. Romaine Mitchell spoke on being away at school and the importance of sharing who you are and your culture.
