A Voice from the Eastern Door

AFS Online Quilt Auction finished on Monday

The Akwesasne Freedom School’s first online quilt auction closed on bidding this past Monday with the successful bid going to Cindy Lazore for $400. The AFS Parent Committee had chosen the quilt during an organizing meeting for the Annual Dinner, which is being held on August 27 and 28. The quilt that was auctioned off was one of three that remained unpaid from last-years fundraiser. With 47 users registered and 30 active bidders vying for the quilt, the online auction took place over a one-week period from August 1-8 closing at 3:00pm.

“We were able to work out some of the bugs from the system with this auction,” remarked Aronhiaies who is the Administrator for the AFS. “It was cool to see the number of bids throughout the week and people really seemed to enjoy watching the progress.”

To participate in the auction interested people just needed to register their names and a valid email account online and were given access to view the bidding history. With the interest generated from this first auction, the AFS is planning on having another the week before the Annual Dinner and using a few of the quilts donated by the parents of students who attend the school.

“Sometime this week we should be posting photos of the quilts we have received so far onto our website to have a special preview of what will be there on the day of the auction,” said Aronhiaies. “People are going to want to come to see what we’ve been given this year, because we’ve already received several hand made quilts this year.”

The AFS operates entirely on grant funding and donations and will be hosting their biggest fundraiser of the year in a few weeks. Students, parents and staff regularly hold smaller scale fundraisers like bike-a-thons and pancake breakfasts throughout the year to pay for school supplies and end of the year trips.
