A Voice from the Eastern Door
WARRANT – Jordan Ernest Benedict, 25 of Akwesasne was arrested on the 31st of July, 2011 under the strength of three outstanding Committal Warrants. It is alleged that on the 26th of November 2010 the warrant was sought. He was located by members of the Akwesasne Mohawk Police and turned over to the Cornwall Community Police Service. He was held in custody until court the following day.
FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY – Massena Village police ticketed Takarakoten Burns of Akwesasne with following too closely following a traffic stop at 1 p.m. Tuesday July 26.
BENCH WARRANT – Massena Village police picked up John A. Bigtree, 24, of 193 St. Regis Road, Hogansburg, on a bench warrant at 4:15 a.m. Thursday July 28. Police said Bigtree was located by St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police and turned over to Massena Village Police. He was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson and released to reappear Aug. 23 in Massena Village Court. The village justice signed the warrant on June 22 after Bigtree had failed to appear as directed for scheduled court appearances. Bigtree had been charged with driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop at 2:29 a.m. Dec. 13 on Maple Street. He reportedly had a blood alcohol content of 0.21 percent.
TRAILER FIRE - Firefighters from Massena, Helena and Hogansburg were unable to save a trailer that was going to be purchased by the current tenant, but they were able to save a 2-week-old kitten. Firefighters and the Massena Rescue Squad were called out at 1:12 a.m. Wednesday July 27 to 162 Hall Road, Massena and were on the scene until 5:39 a.m. The tenant, Harold L. Petke, was in the process of buying the property from his sister, Sebrina Hickey of Oklahoma. No occupants were inside the trailer, which was a total loss at the time of the fire. But firefighters did find a 2-week-old kitten that was carried to safety.
DRUG-TRAFFICKING – Saratoga Springs Police and members of the Capital District Drug Enforcement Task Force have arrested five area residents in connection with an ongoing investigation into large amounts of marijuana being funneled from the northern region. The drug-trafficking investigation began following a traffic stop in November 2010. Authorities then raided a Saratoga residence and allegedly discovered that a marijuana distribution ring was operating throughout the Capital District. Authorities have since identified several people they say are involved in helping to smuggle and distribute anywhere from 50 to 75 pounds of marijuana in Saratoga Springs on a weekly basis. Similar amounts were also distributed throughout Albany, Troy and Clifton Park, Saratoga police said in a news release. During the investigation, police said, authorities intercepted more than 50 pounds of pot destined for the downstate area and seized tens of thousands of dollars in drug proceeds. Ten people have been arrested so far, including these local residents: Matthew Dillon, 29, of Fort Covington; John Snow, 27, of Hogansburg; Margaret Jacobs, 34, of Fort Covington; Austin Thompson, 18, of Akwesasne; and Danielle Bevins, 32, of Plattsburgh. Dillon was arrested on federal charges of possession with the intent to distribute more than 50 kilograms of marijuana and conspiracy to distribute more than 50 kilograms of marijuana. The others were arrested on state charges, with Snow accused of fourth-degree conspiracy and first-degree criminal possession of marijuana. Jacobs and Thompson were charged with fourth-degree conspiracy. Bevins was charged with first-degree criminal sale of marijuana, first-degree possession of marijuana and fourth-degree conspiracy. All five were arrested within the last few months as part of the ongoing investigation and will reappear in downstate courts this month to face the allegations.
