A Voice from the Eastern Door

Peter J. Burns

Peter Burns Sr. was born in 1930 and at an early age was introduced to the game of lacrosse. He devoted most of his life to the game, and when he could no longer physically play, he continued to help grow future players.

Burns was a champion player on numerous lacrosse teams including the St. Regis Indians in Akwesasne and teams in Kahnawake, Rochester, Cornwall, Brantford and St. Catharines.

In 1998, Burns was inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and in 1999 the Iroquois Lacrosse Association also inducted him into their Hall of Fame, noting his reputation for stickhandling and winning face-offs.

Burns created his own team, the Snye Warriors, and built an outdoor lacrosse box named ‘The Frank Roundpoint Potato Bowl’ after his lacrosse mentor, Frank Roundpoint.

“You plant potatoes, you get potatoes,” a young Burns was told by Roundpoint. “You plant lacrosse players, you get lacrosse players.”

Burns died in 1999. He left behind two businesses, Truckstop #9 and #9 Fuels. The Peter Burns Memorial Masters Lacrosse Tournament is also an honor to his life and career and the sport of lacrosse.
