Tribe Reacts to Recent Court Decision

Plans Meeting with Community to Discuss Options

AKWESASNE TERRITORY - On Tuesday, June 21, 2011, the State Court’s Appellate Division in Seneca Nation of Indians v the State of New York lifted the Temporary Restraining Order preventing enforcement of the cigarette tax scheme on Reservations statewide, including the Saint Regis Mohawk Reservation. This means the NY State Department of Taxation and Finance will likely start implementation and enforcement of the tax scheme aimed at the sale of tax exempt cigarettes on Reservations since there is no longer any court order preventing it from doing so.

The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has scheduled a public meeting with Tribal members next Wednesday, June 29 at 6:00 pm in the lobby of the Community Building to hear from Tribal members and to discuss possible options for our community.
