Kahnawake Mohawks fall to Akwesasne Braves

The Kahnawake Mohawks fell to 1-1 on the season after losing 12-5 at the hands of the Akwesasne Braves on Friday night at the Kahnawake Sports Complex. The Mohawks game on Sunday against the West End Warlocks, as well the Caughnawaga Indians home against the Warlocks were cancelled. The Quebec Senior Lacrosse League will have a special meeting on Tuesday to determine the Warlocks’ future.

The Mohawks opened the scoring at 3:13 of the first period on a goal by Greg Diabo (Joe Frank Thomas). Peter Jacobs (Lee Thomas, Mickey Gilchrist) scored at 5:16 to make it 1-1. The Braves then took the lead at 15:08 of the first on a goal by Mike Benedict (Josh Jacobs, Tyson Square). Evan Cree gave the Braves a 3-1 lead at 18:25 of the first. Diabo (Alex Henderson, Al Jones) scored with just 15 seconds left in the period to make it 3-2.

The Braves continued to put the ball in the net in the second period. Scott Thompson made it 4-2 at 8:25 of the second period. Square (Ryan Seymour) extended the Braves’ lead to 5-2 at 9:05. Mohawks forward Jamie Rooney (Ian Crawford, Ryan McComber) cut the lead to 5-3 at 14:16. With just 44 second left in the period Jacobs netted his second of the game to give the Braves a 6-3 lead going into the second intermission.

At 2:57 of the third period Kahnawake’s Tontie McComber (Jones) made it 6-4. At 5:53 Angus Leborgne (Gilchrist, Josh Jacobs) extended the Braves lead to 7-4. Barely 20 seconds later Gilchrist (Hyna Thompson) made it 8-4. Rooney (Henderson, Jones) would cut the lead to 8-5 Peter Jacobs would then score his third and fourth goals of the game to make it 10-5. The Braves would get goals by Leborgne and Benedict to close out the game with a score of 12-5.
