Akwesasne Mohawk Territory - It is with great sadness that the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne announces the passing of respected and dedicated Akwesasne community member, Salli M. Kawennotakie Benedict. After waging a heroic and courageous battle, Salli left this world during the afternoon of May 15, 2011 surrounded by family at the Cornwall Community Hospital.
On behalf of MCA, Grand Chief Mike Kanentakeron Mitchell offers the following words in response to this unfortunate loss:
“The community of Akwesasne has lost a cherished resident and champion of Aboriginal Rights. Salli dedicated her life to protecting and fighting for Akwesasne. There was no one more committed to the cause than Salli, that’s why we loved her so much. We knew what filled her heart, which was her family and her community—her Nation family.
It is a testament to her hard work and commitment that our community’s land claims are being negotiated with the Government of Canada. As a result, we wanted so much for her to be with us on the final leg of this journey. She was so much a part of negotiations and she will still be with us in spirit. We will continue to work just as hard as if she was still by our side encouraging us all on.”
To Salli’s family, the MCA offers its sincere and heartfelt condolences. Words cannot begin to express the sorrow we feel for your terrible loss. Our thoughts are with you at this time of grief and sadness.
To her friends and colleagues, as you comprehend this profound loss, let your memories of Salli bring you strength. For others that knew her, our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
