Long-term care facilities launch trial period for "Meals on Wheels" Program

By MCA Communications Unit

On January 3, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s long-term care facilities, Iakhihsohtha in Tsi Snaihne and Tsiionkwanonsohte on Kawehno:ke, began a trial period for preparing and delivering meals to elder residents in Akwesasne’s three northern districts.  The Program’s trial phase runs until March 31st and provides nutritious meals that help Akwesasne elders to have full and independent lives.

“The initial response from clients has been very favorable and the home-cooked meals are receiving compliments,” said Iakhihsohtha Administrator Patricia Adiaconitei. She added, “This is our first attempt to provide this service, so our staff is elated that clients are very satisfied and that Tota’s are enjoying their meals.”

MCA’s Department of Health initiated the Meals on Wheels program after community nursing staff recognized nutritional deficits in clients and the ongoing progression of illnesses. It was also created to address the delays in meal deliveries due to the border crossing and response received at the facility’s congregate meals.

Meals are individually prepared for elders based to their dietary and nutritional needs. The Meals on Wheels program strives to make the meals healthier and meet the nurse’s prescribed requirements for the client. As a result, the service is more personal and the feedback has been encouraging.

In the first few weeks of the Program, Iakhihsohtha has been delivering meals to sixty (60) elder residents in Kana:takon and Tsi Snaihne. Tsiionkwanonsohte has seen equal success—delivering 36 meals to elders on Kawehno:ke. All meals are delivered in the morning, five (5) days week, from the facility to the client’s home with the help of a delivery driver.

To be eligible for meal deliveries, an individual must be 65-years old or older and unable to prepare their own meals. An application must also be completed and an individual assessment needs to be conducted.  If approved, the applicant is notified and their home is placed on the delivery list.

For elders that reside in a northern district and are interested in receiving the meal delivery service, please contact Joan Cook at MCA’s Home Care/Home Support Program by calling (613) 575- 2250 extension 1067.
