In June a ceremony was held at the St. Regis Mohawk School to plant a tree in memory of the late Katsitsientha Barnes and to name the school’s garden after the late Kristen Cree. Families of both girls attended the emotional ceremony.

In June the Akwesasne Eagle Watch, a grassroots Anti-Drug organization targeting Oxcontin drug dealers, began holding marches, rallies, and traffic stops to educate the community on the growing Oxycontin-abuse epidemic. Mary Gray and Tribal Sub-Chief Stacy Adams held signs during a Route 37 march.

The first day of summer in June was enjoyed throughout the community as everyone found ways to get fresh air. At Adams’ Marina the Peters-Martin sisters played on the dock.

Chief Randy Hart took the oath of office at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s inauguration, stating he was both “honored” and “proud” to take the position. More than 500 tribal members voted to elect Hart.

In July the Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team became international news when their declaration as sovereign First Nations people (not U.S. or Canadian citizens) prevented them from attending the World Championships in England.
