SRMS Collects 2,514 items
In the movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, who is George Bailey’s guardian angel? If you can answer this question then you should have attended the Kids Trivia Night at the Snye Recreation Centre last Thursday. This event was co-hosted by the Snye Recreation Committee and the St. Regis Mohawk School Parent Teacher Organization.
No, the guardian angel is not Roger Mitchell or Joe Lazore as some seem to believe, though they did both attend this event along with the 21 teams that were registered. Each team that registered had to donate either a new toy or canned good as a registration fee. The team who brought in the most items would also win a prize.
Over 165 items were collected during the trivia night, to be added to the collection by the St. Regis Mohawk School. The school’s students are collecting 2,500 toys and/or canned goods for the Mountain of Toys Fundraiser.
The school’s principal, Sharlee Thomas, made a deal with her students that if they reached their goal, she would dress up like a chicken in front of the whole school. The items raised at the trivia night went a long way in closing the gap for the students to reach and exceed their mark. They ended with 2,514 items. Thomas will don the chicken costume for her students on Dec. 22 and will be handing out ice cream to them as well.
After the final question, the team “Down By the Bays” were declared the winners with 8,000 points. A three-way tie resulted in the PTO having to come up with a tie-breaker question, leaving the teams “The Incredibles” and “Team Crosby” tied for second place with 7,000 points each. The “Smarter Lazore’s” brought in the most donated items, with a count of 45 items (toys and canned goods).
Principal Thomas stated, “It’s really nice for the community to come out and support events like the Akwesasne Basket Drive and Mountain of Toys. It’s teaching kids to give back to their communities.”
The next Kids Trivia Night at the Snye Recreation is scheduled to take place during the Winter Carnival on Feb. 17, 2011.
(The name of George Bailey’s angel was Clarence.)
