A Voice from the Eastern Door

Hundreds gather for Sing

The Haudenosaunee Six Nations Sing was a huge success over the weekend, taking place in Akwesasne at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse. The event brought singing societies together from all over the Haudenosaunee territory to showcase their newly created 5 verses of the Women’s Song. Groups like the Kahnawake Men’s & Women’s Society, Allegheny Society and two from Six Nations were among those to attend.

Excitement was in the air as friends and family reunited for this special occasion. Well over 800 Haudenosaunee people attended Akwesasne’s Fall Sing. The last time Akwesasne hosted the Sing was five-years ago in the spring, which was a memorable occasion to all as the road to the Mohawk Nation Longhouse had flooded.

The fundraising effort to sponsor the Fall Sing in Akwesasne was spearheaded by the Akwesasne Women’s Singing Group, who have held at least three major events since the end of summer.

Once the business of the day was complete, the social began and lasted well past midnight. A congratulations goes out to the Akwesasne Women’s Singing group for organizing such a great event, and to the community of Akwesasne for all of their support.

The next Haudenosaunee Six Nations Sing is being hosted in Oneida – London, Ontario in Spring 2011.
