Man, 76, killed in DWI accident

An elderly Akwesasne man died early Halloween morning after being struck by a vehicle as he was walking on Route 37.

St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police responded to the scene at approximately 2:35 a.m. on Oct. 31. Luke Arquette, 76, had been struck near the American Legion and 37 West Restaurant in Akwesasne.

Arquette was transported to Massena Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries he sustained in the accident.

Tribal police arrested the driver of the vehicle, Gilbert T. Jacobs, 34 of Fort Covington without incident and charged him with criminally negligent homicide, driving while intoxicated and driving while abilities impaired. He appeared in Bombay Town Court and was held in lieu of $15,000 bail or $30,000 bond. He is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 23.
