A Voice from the Eastern Door

Letter to the editor

SE:KON (HELLO)

My name is Michele Micki King. I participatated in the Nike Women’s Marathon, October 17th, 2010 in San Francisco, California as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in memory of a very dear friend of mine, Andrea Janelle Shively.

Andrea Janelle Shively peacefully went to be with her Lord at her family’s home on May 11, 2010 after a courageous six-month battle with Melanoma. Andrea was a 7th grade math teacher for Fairfax County Schools in Alexandria, VA, a 2004 graduate of Heidelberg University and a 2000 graduate of Midview High School.

Andrea touched more hearts in her 27 years than most will in twice that time. Andrea had a smile that would light up the room. She had a passion for teaching math to 12- and 13-year-olds when most shudder at the thought of trying to teach a teenager anything! Andrea was also the first one in a crowd to quiet the crying baby as she swaddled them in her handmade blankets and would play on the floor with the rest of the little ones, treating them with a love as though they were her own.

Andrea will be remembered as the daughter with the smile that never ends, the sister who loved to talk, and the aunt who always greeted her nieces as her “little monkeys” and then painted their tiny toenails.

Andrea now enjoys eternal life with her grandfathers, Cass Mikoy and William Shively. She will be remembered as “our baby” by Dave and Judy Shively; a fun-loving sister to Larissa (Spencer) Ryan and Erica (Brent) Maloney; an adored aunt to Sydney and Molly Ryan; a thoughtful and precious granddaughter to Loretta Mikoy and Dorothy Shively; a niece and cousin to many; and a girlfriend who will always be “my brown-eyed girl” to Michael Barnes. Andrea will forever remain a smile in our hearts!

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS’s mission.

I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support! Micki King
