A Voice from the Eastern Door
This past May, ten community members signed up to participate in a friendly battle of the green thumbs pumpkin-growing contest.
The contest has been going on since 2006 and is hosted by a group of employees at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. In the first year of the competition the winning pumpkin weighed in at around the 80-90 lb range. Each year the weight of the winning pumpkin grew heavier and heavier, with last year’s winner coming in at 189 lbs.
This year Paulette White has dethroned the 2009 Pumpkin King, Shawn Martin, with a whopping monster of a pumpkin weighing in at 250lbs! Martin was second at 179 lbs, Rosemarie Jacobs clocked in at 93 lbs, Mera Faubert at 16 lbs, and Tina Tarbell a perfectly round 5 oz.
The 2010 Pumpkin Queen said she used Miracle Grow and lots of water to help her pumpkin grow.
Congratulations to Paulette White on a job well done this year. See everyone again next year!
