A Voice from the Eastern Door

Local woman opens home interior business - Better Your Home

A unique service is being offered to Akwesasne and the surrounding communities by a Mohawk woman with a natural touch and a love of home improvement. Alexandra David has started a private business called Better Your Home Design.

David said she has always loved decorating and reorganizing her home and recently decided to dive right into making it a business. She studied some home interior courses through schools in Ottawa and Toronto and is now licensed for interior decorating, interior designing, color consulting, home and office organizing, and professional staging.

The services David can supply are endless. She can help a family simply pick a paint color, she can completely renovate a bedroom, organize a junk drawer, and so much more. What’s great for her is that she enjoys every minute of it.

“People think interior design and they think it has to be expensive,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be expensive, you have a budget and I try to work with it.”

As a licensed home interior designer, David can also get discounts on supplies like paint from local merchants.

David can do as much or as little as each client needs. Some families need consulting while others want her to do the actual work like painting herself, and she’s happy to work with everyone to meet their specific needs. She stresses that she does not want to apply her own taste to anyone’s home or business but rather get a feel for each client’s own personal taste.

“You tell me everything that you’re looking for,” she said. “I get a sense of what style you have. I take pictures of all your rooms. I do measurements of all your rooms so that I’m able to do better floor planning for you, that kind of thing.”

David also hopes that potential clients realize just how much they can have help with. It’s not just painting or decorating. Some people have inherited their loved one’s entire household of belongings and have it stored away.

“There are ways to showcase those things,” she said.

She said it also doesn’t have to be a major project. With proper planning, she can change a child’s bedroom with new paint and decorations in one day so that when he or she leaves for school one morning their room looks one way, and when they step off the bus it’s entirely transformed.

“People are too busy to do these things on their own,” she said. “We don’t have the flexibility to take a couple days off here and a couple days off there, and people have families.”

David also works with custom fabrics so that she can refurbish a beautiful dining room chair instead of sending it off to the dump.

“It’s all about turning your home into a place you love to be,” she said.
