A Voice from the Eastern Door
While many kids are likely bored with summer vacation already, at least 150 of them will be busy for the next several weeks thanks to the Johnson O’Malley Summer Program.
Last year the summer program was held for the first time at the Generations Field playground, pavilion and soccer field. This year, the program was reinstated with additional funds that allowed JOM to serve 150 children instead of the normal 80.
The children – supervised by 18 staff people – will spend Monday to Friday at the field playing different sports and games and enjoying what the fun outdoor activities the program staff thinks up for them that day. Every Thursday the group will spend the day at the beach, and two field trips are also planned, one to Ausable Chasm and one to the New York Power Authority.
The participants – who are between the ages of 5 and 13 will also be spending some quality time with community elders this summer as they’ll take turns visiting the senior’s center adjacent to the Generations Field and they’ll read to an elder.
There was no cost at all for children to attend the program and both breakfast and lunch is provided free as well. Unfortunately, the program is already at capacity and no new children can be accepted.
