AKWESASNE – Mr. Richard A. “Dick” Wheeler, 66, of 237 Cook Road, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 7, 2010, at Massena Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health since April.
Dick was born April 2, 1966 in Massena, the son of Albert and Elizabeth Cree Wheeler. He attended Thomas Indian School and Salmon River Central School. He served for a short time in the US Army. On June 27, 1964, he married Sharon R. Cook at St. Patrick’s Church in Rochester.
Dick was a self-employed electrician in Akwesasne for many years. He also once worked for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and worked for 15 years in the Foundry in Rochester before moving back to Akwesasne in 1978. He was an AA Member for 22 years. He enjoyed collecting coins, sports, and was an avid Yankees fan. Dick also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and race cars.
He is survived by his 2 sons, David Wheeler and his wife, Elaine of Akwesasne; Kevin Wheeler and his wife, Mary of Cornwall, Ontario; 4 grandchildren, Kayla, Andrew, Conner, and Dustin; his former wife, Sharon Cook of Akwesasne; a brother, Gerald Wheeler of Oklahoma; and nieces and nephews.
Dick was predeceased by his son, Richard A. Wheeler, Jr. on September 9, 1999 and a sister, Shirley Lazore in November 2008.
Friends may call at the home of Sharon Cook, 1039 Drum Street Road, Friday, beginning at 2:00 PM until the time of the services. Funeral services will be held Saturday 2:00 at the home. Cremation will follow the services. Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home.
