A Voice from the Eastern Door

Alice in Akwesasne

The Coalition for Community Empowerment hosted the first ever Alice in Wonderland themed tea party for the children of Akwesasne on Jun. 13 at the generations park. Invitations were distributed during the Memorial day parade and guests were asked to RSVP for the special fun filled evening. About 30 partygoers attended and everybody who showed up was dressed in their best.

“Ten years ago Leona Barns and I had taken our children when they were little to a[n Alice in Wonderland] tea party at the Museum of Man and Civilization in Ottawa and they had so much fun,” said Caroline Francis. “Then we thought we could do this when thinking of things to do for the Coalition.”

From 11:00am to 4:00pm children enjoyed the company of the Alice in Wonderland characters. Among the special guests were the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Mad Hatter, some chess pieces and of course Alice. They played Crocket, painted their very own roses and playing musical chairs.

“This was just to do something for the kids,” said Dana Henhawk.

The evening was complete with a visit from Belly Buttons the clown and a piece of whimsical cake from Joe’s Custom Cakes.
