A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Freedom School celebrated a fun day on May 28 with games and relays throughout the day.
The students had been training every morning before school rain or shine for 2 months for the Kahanwake race, which took place earlier this week that they were unfortunately unable to attend. But, to make up for it the students got to show off their hard work by having their own relay for their school’s fun day.
“Its just about having fun,” said Maxine Kaiatahente Cole, a grade 7 and 8 teacher at the Akwesasne Freedom School.
Students were grouped by running speeds and put into teams. Along with the help of Nate Thompson from the Let’s Get Healthy Program they set up along the horse shoe in Raquette. The relay ran from the stop sign to the fish mail box and back and everybody who participated received a medal for their hard work.
“I always like helping out the Freedom School,” said Thompson, who also coordinates the school’s weekly gym classes.
Following the relay was a barbeque and the rest of the day was full of fun activities. An archery course was set up to help the young men practice for their sun ceremony. A target practice was set up along with an obstacle course. There were also stations set up for ultimate tug of war.
The Akwesasne Freedom School is a big supporter of living healthy lifestyles and likes to see their students eating healthy and getting lots of exercise.
