A Voice from the Eastern Door
Letter to the Editor,
My name is Tom Porter, and I have spent my life upholding the ideals of a traditional Mohawk. This has meant my non-involvement in the politics of the St. Regis Mohawk tribal government.
I write this letter because I am making an exception to that policy, and encouraging all persons who are eligible and do participate, to vote for Randy Hart, on June 5, 2010.
I have known Randy since he was an infant. I have watched him become a person who is honest, hardworking and fair.
Randy is an objective person, he does not react to things unless he has an understanding of them. If he does not know about something, he will research it and then help to find a solution.
The last time I met with Randy I was very surprised to find that he took it upon himself to learn the Mohawk language, and spoke to me almost fluently. I know how hard it is to learn a language when you are older, but because restoring our language is so important to Randy he did it. I know that when Randy says he wants to work to restore our language, customs and traditions, that he means it and he will lead by example.
Our community has lost many things. The Mohawk Nation was once a nation of greatness, but we are losing the things that make us great, and we don’t even realize its happening. In recent years, some of our people have tried to restore the principles that make us great, and Randy is one of those people.
I believe that Randy Hart, will help lead our government to become a body that we can all be proud of and want to participate in.
Sincerely,
Tom Porter, Bear Clan
