Two Akwesasne women were arrested last Friday in Ticonderoga, NY when police discovered a large amount of marijuana inside their vehicle.
Police said they pursued the vehicle initially when it was observed doing a U-turn just before a New York State Police and U.S. Border Patrol traffic safety checkpoint at around 10:40 a.m. on April 30.
Kelsey Jackson, 22 and her passenger, Sheyenne Smoke, 21, drove for two miles before stopping, police said. Inside the vehicle police found just under 75 lbs. of marijuana with an estimated street value of $250,000. Authorities did not specify where the drugs originated or were destined.
Jackson was charged with 1st degree criminal possession of marijuana, failure to comply (stop for police), 3rd degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, improper U-turn and other traffic violations. Smoke was charged with 1st degree criminal possession of marijuana.
The drug charges against both women are felonies.
