A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Cornwall Atom A Typhoons Girls hockey team competed at the 2010 Provincial Championships April 9-11 in Mississauga, Ontario. Team members from Akwesasne include Lexi Lazore, Kamryn Ransom, Amber Thomas, Maya Swamp, Bailey Thomas and KC Herne.
Cornwall began round robin play against the Sarnia Lady Sting winning 7-0. Kristy Pidgeon had the hot stick scoring five goals. Lazore finished with a goal and two assists. Herne had three assists and Sarah Dulmage had two assists. Kalista Coleman ended the scoring with one coast-to-coast goal.
The second game on Friday proved to be a little tougher with Cornwall winning 4-3 against Toronto Leaside. Herne started the scoring on the first shift of the game with Lazore assisting. Amber Thomas had a great game and her hard work paid off with two goals. Maya Swamp, Lauren McLeod and Coleman picked up the assists. Pidgeon rounded out the scoring with an unassisted game winner.
On Saturday, Cornwall faced off against eventual gold medalists, Goderich Sailorettes in their final round robin game. The sailorettes came out flying and shut out Cornwall 4-0. Cornwall finished second in Pool A and moved into a qualifying round against Scarborough.
This was a rematch game as Scarborough beat Cornwall handily in a previous tournament. It was an action packed game with end-to-end action. Amber Thomas came through again to tie the game 1-1 with Herne and Taylor Barkley picking up the assists. It looked like the game would be headed for overtime as time was winding down but Pidgeon got a great feed from Jensen Pattinson and scored the go-ahead goal with only a few minutes to play. The game was far from over as shortly after Cornwall scored they found themselves two players down with Pidgeon and Pattinson in the penalty box. Scarborough pulled their goalie for a six on three advantage, but Cornwall hung on for the win. With the win, Cornwall advanced to the quarterfinal round and would play their third game on Saturday. The winner was guaranteed a chance to play in the Provincial medal games on Sunday.
Cornwall’s next opponent was eventual silver medalists, the Peterborough Ice Kats. It was an evenly matched game as both teams had excellent scoring chances. Cornwall would score first as Pidgeon scored her eighth goal of the tournament with Herne and Lazore assisting. Peterborough would tie the game shortly thereafter and then they scored the go-ahead goal off a lucky bounce from the corner thus ending Cornwall’s season.
Congratulations to Maya, Bailey, Amber, Kamryn, KC and Lexi on a long hard fought hockey season.
