Zumba: A Fitness Revolution

Are you tired of the same old workout routine? Zumba is a new fitness idea revolutionizing the way you work out. Zumba is a type of Latin dance aerobics influenced by dances from around the world proven to burn 1,000 calories in one hour. And, it is being offered right here in Akwesasne.

Zumba classes are instructed by Tai Martin, a representative of Malone Greater YMCA. She is a certified Zumba instructor and does her own choreography for each class. She teaches Zumba Gold for beginners to adults and really knows how to make you work.

“Personally it boosts confidence in oneself,” said Martin. “Zumba has grown, it is a fitness revolution.”

As you can imagine dancing away the pounds is great for your looks and also for your cardiovascular health. Martin does an excellent job of keeping the music and the moves fresh with Latin inspired music and contemporary club remixes.

Martin’s classes in Malone started with 12 people and quickly exploded to 65. The same is expected for Akwesasne so you better sign up fast.

“It doesn’t feel like a work out at all,” said one of Martin’s students. “It’s fun just to laugh at yourself.”

Classes are offered at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Let’s Get Healthy Program Office on Route 37 Mondays and Saturdays starting at 6:30 pm. The cost is only $5.
