A Voice from the Eastern Door

Soaring Eagles’ March Madness Volleyball Camp

During March Break a group of young volleyball players were busy working hard at improving their volleyball skills at the Soaring Eagles March Madness Volleyball Camp. The camp was held from March 15-18 at the Kana:takon School gymnasium and was hosted and instructed by the Soaring Eagles Volleyball Club and sponsored by A’nowara’ko:wa Arena using funds they appropriated from the NCB Reinvestment Fund.

March Madness was designed for girls in grades 5-12 interested in improving their volleyball skills and to stay active during March Break. The group of 13 was instructed by Soaring Eagles member Chelsea Sunday who also plays volleyball for SUNY Potsdam and has a level 1 certified coaching degree. They worked on several key aspects to being a good team player, such as: serving, setting, bumping and spiking.

“My favorite part is having gotten all these kids(here),” said Sunday. “Some (are) new and some have played and they have all improved tremendously throughout the week.” Sunday was assisted by Karonhiotha and other Soaring Eagles members and volunteers throughout the week.

Everyone who participated received awards at the final day of camp: the Coaches Award went to Raylynn Sunday and Nidia Dejung; Most Improved - Josee Sunday; Most likely-to-be-Giggling - Crissy Benedict; Sportmanship - Jenny Dejung; Pancake Award -Tashawna Francis; and Participation Awards went to Belle Dejung and Brandee King. The final award was presented to a group of girls who played well as a team. It was called the “First Team of Outstanding Players“ award and it was presented to Krista Loran, Raven Oakes, Bailey Thomas, Tatum LaFrance, Aryanna Jacobs and Tianna Back.

The Soaring Eagles Volleyball Club would like to say that they are greatly appreciative for this opportunity to host a volleyball camp, which will be held annually every March Break.
