A Voice from the Eastern Door
On February 22, 2010 at approximately 9:28 p.m. the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service received a call that a snowmobiler had broken through the ice on the St. Lawrence River north of Stanley Island, Ontario.
The initial call was received by the Ontario Provincial Police who was already on the scene when the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service was notified.
The Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department assisted by searching the open water area and located a snowmobile. Witnesses to the incident were interviewed and it was determined that one male, Donald Leo Joseph Rockburn, 24 years of age, of Cornwall, Ontario was the snowmobiler who had broken through the ice.
The Ontario Provincial Police Dive Team will be conducting a search of the area. The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service is coordinating the search for Mr. Rockburn with the local Ontario Provincial Police, the Ontario Provincial Police Dive Team, and the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department.
