A Voice from the Eastern Door

Kana:takon School Winter Olympics 2010

On Monday February 1st, the Kana:takon School students began with brainstorming ideas for their Team Banner, Team Door Decorations, Team Cheer and Team Pledge.

Tuesday, February 2nd the day began with all teams reporting to their coach’s room where they wrote their pledges and cheers. They also created their team banner and decorated their coach’s door. In the afternoon the student’s held the Opening of the Games. Each team marched into the gym, to their chosen song and paraded around the gym with their banner. Representatives from each team read their team pledge. Then we held the Cheer-off. The teams received points for each of these categories. Then it was off to begin the athletics portion of the day.

On Wednesday, February 3rd, the afternoon was filled with challenges. Students competed in an outside in the snow Softball Game and an indoors . Wii Snowboarding Tournament. Once again the teams earned points for their respective team. While participating in the indoor portion of the day, students were treated to maple syrup snow cones.

Thursday, February 4th, had all of the Kana:takon School students traveling to the A’nowara’kowa Arena for an afternoon of ice skating and games.

The end of the games on Friday, February 5th had the students reporting to their coach’s room to design and build a sled that could hold up to three K4/K5 students. The only materials each team was given was cardboard, plastic, duct tape and rope. Then it was outside for the races. Each team participated in three heats with the older students pulling the younger students. After the race students participated in Handball and Broomball Games. The afternoon had the students participating in the Snow Tug of War Challenge. Then back into the school for hot chocolate and a movie “They Call Me Chief.” This movie highlighted the beginnings of Native Americans in the sport of NHL Hockey.

The Closing Ceremonies had each team receiving their respective medals. The “White Wolves” received the gold medals, “Golden Warriors” received the silver medals, “Black Hawks” received the bronze medals and “Red Wings” received the participation award.

A special thanks to all the staff for their active participation and encouraging words during the Olympics. I would also like to the the AMBE Parent Committee for purchasing the medals.
