A Voice from the Eastern Door
Akwesasne is always proud of the many achievements of their young people, especially their many promising athletes. In an interview with 3 Salmon River Central School Senior athletes we get to see just what makes them so amazing.
Krista Oakes plays hockey and softball for Salmon River. She is currently playing softball which is her favorite.
“I enjoy the sport because it seems to bring out my character more,” said Oakes.
She started playing at the age of 6 and has been pitching now for 13 years. She said that last year Salmon River’s softball team almost made it to the final 4 and this year Oakes plans to be there to help the team make it all the way. She also aims at breaking the records of the last pitcher named Jay.
Being an athlete takes a lot of hard work and commitment. Oakes says she keeps focused by staying away from any drugs or alcohol. She also has another reason for staying clean and that is her little brother.
“My little brother really looks up to me and I try to be the best role model I can for him.”
Another impressive athlete is Olivia Cook, who enjoys playing many sports, including: soccer, hockey, basketball, softball and track and field. She said that hockey is her favorite where she plays forward center.
“I like the speed and being in an arena because it is cold,” said Cook.
Cook became interested in hockey after following in her sister‘s, Ilene Cook, footsteps.
“She played and I wanted to play.”
Cook’s involvement with hockey began with the Initiation Program on Kawehnoke (Cornwall Island) and she has been playing for the last 8 years. She has played for Cornwall of a few years and currently plays at the intermediate level for the Nepean Wildcats.
Cook also has a niece, Cloe Cook, who is 2 years old and already on skates.
“I try to be the best role model for her.”
Andrew Bomberry also enjoys playing several sports including soccer, hockey and lacrosse. In field lacrosse he plays long stick midfield.
“I like being outdoors,” said Bomberry. “It is not too cold, nice weather usually. And it follows the traditional way.”
Bomberry has many reasons to be a good role model including his brother Adam and 2 step-brothers Nolan and Oakley Thomas.
“I try to be a leader on the team and a good sportsman in front of them.”
Playing on a team sport helps to build character and create natural leaders. Many athletes got their start looking up to their older siblings, like Cook and her sister, and they continue to do well by being a role model for their younger siblings, or nieces and nephews who are looking up to them. Whether it is following in a siblings footsteps or following traditions, being a model athlete can open doors. Each of these athletes owe part of their success to sports and they plan to continue playing at a college level after they graduate in the spring.
