AKWESASNE - Ms. Dorothy R. Jacobs, 91, of 1357 State Route 37, peacefully passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2009 at Tsi ion kwan onh so:te, Cornwall Island Long Term Care Facility.

She was born November 13, 1918 in Hogansburg, the daughter of the late Michael and Sarah Ransom Jacobs. She attended Mohawk and Reservation Schools and graduated from Massena High School. In 1960, she graduated from Mater Dei in Ogdensburg and also took graduate courses.

She first worked as an attendant and clerk at Yopps General Grocery Store, later going to work at Shields Slipper Factory in Bombay for 25 years. She also worked as an assistant to Sister Christine Taylor at Mater Dei and than worked in the office at the Akwesasne Senior Citizens for 12 years, retiring on June 1, 2002. She was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society and taught catechism for many years. She was also a member of the Akwesasne Senior Citizens. She enjoyed meeting people at the Senior Citizen Center and traveling, having traveled to the Vatican 1980. She also tutored many students for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and at the Mohawk Library.

She is survived by a sister, Margie Hamlin, Canandaigua, NY; a brother, Charles Jacobs, Hogansburg; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Lillian M. Herne on July 6, 2008 and a brother, Francis “Frank” Jacobs on March 21, 2003.

Friends called at the Kateri Hall until a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated on Monday, December 28, 2009 at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. George H. Belgarde, SJ, celebrating. Burial was in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Hogansburg. Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
