Cornwall Island, Ontario - On December 2nd, 2009 at approximately 4:05 a.m., Akwesasne Mohawk Police were dispatched to a report of a vehicle being rammed on Cornwall Island, Ontario. Officers located the suspect vehicle, and while attempting to stop it were also rammed. The suspect vehicle was located a short time later.
The operator, Jeremy Francis, 22 years of age of Cornwall Island, Ontario was arrested and held for a Bail Hearing at the Cornwall Provincial Court on December 3rd, 2009.
During the incident shots were fired by the Akwesasne Mohawk Police when Francis drove at them in an aggressive manner and endangered their lives. Francis rammed the police car several times as well as drove at another officer standing nearby. No one was injured as a result of the shots. The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service requested the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police S, D&G Crime Unit due to the delicate nature of the investigation.
Francis was charged with Impaired Driving, Driving Over .08, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Flight from Police, Assault with a Weapon (Vehicle), Assault Police, Endangering the Life of a Police Officer, Resist Arrest, Mischief Under $5000.00, Mischief Over $5000.00, and Breach of Probation.
Francis remains in custody.
The investigation is continuing.
