A Voice from the Eastern Door

Latest Hobby - Prompted By Enjoyment of Sports

One year ago, while riding his school bus to Jefferson Elementary, Blake Lazore began his new hobby.  His friends Tekarahkwineken and Dyson were comparing their card collection and that’s when Blake’s interest in sports cards began. Watching them and being so enthusiastic about their hobby sparked his interest and he wanted to give it a try.

Blake and his Dad Ed began searching for a sports card shop in Cornwall and found and met Dave and Steve. They own a shop where many guys hang out visiting and sharing stories about sports. Well, through Blake’s observation, he noticed that about 80% of the customers and friends were older men. Many of them have been collectors since they were young boys. That was pretty awesome he thought.  Blake felt so cool being among these very knowledgeable men and for being able to keep up with them as he shared his own growing knowledge on various sports.

For this interview, Blake was asked what he has learned the most about collecting so far. He said, “I learned that cards have so much value and they need good care.”

He has also learned so many interesting facts about athletes in all sports especially baseball, hockey, football and basketball. It’s an enjoyable past time out of school and on weekends.

Blake’s favorite athletes are Sidney Crosby in hockey, as well as Zach Bogosian whom he met in person with an autographed card.  In football, he likes Sanchez, in baseball it is Alex Rodriques, in basketball it is Lebron James and for his Tota Paul’s favorite, he includes Ovechkin.

The card he values the most is an autographed Sidney Crosby hockey card. The card that he owns that has the most value is a one of one Maurice “Rocket” Richard with Jonathan CheeChoo earning the trophy for both making the most goals. This special card is autographed by both players.

How does card collecting help you?  “ It helps me in my Math as I keep up with checking statistics of players, goals, career wins etc.  I know the stats pretty good now and I enjoy this hobby.  I also like being partners with my Dad.
