‘Polar Plunge’ for Special Olympics New York

Story and photos by Debbie Cook-Jacobs

The first of New York States ‘Polar Plunge’ fundraising events was held at NYPA’s Hawkins Point Visitors Center in Massena on Saturday, November 7th with 88 people taking the plunge.  The water wasn’t terribly cold but chilly enough at 49 degrees. Money raised was between $12 and $13 thousand. Quite good for the first year of the event.

Plunge teams were from the NY State Police, US Customs, Border Patrol, NYS Corrections, and the Massena Volunteer Fire Dept.  The Massena Rescue Squad assisted with divers in the water.  The team of US Customs officers from the Trout River Port of Entry raised the most money- $2200. The Massena Rescue Squad and NYS Police assisted with divers in the water.

Other organizations that participated were the North Country Insurance Professionals, Cerebral Palsy Association of Northern NY, Massena Elks Lodge #1702, the Clarkson University Cross Country team, Alpha Tau Omega fraternity from St. Lawrence University, and a team from the NY Power Authority.  Special Olympics NY Area 27 had several local athletes in attendance as well.  Blind Andy, a DJ from 101.5 The Fox also participated. Robin Miller with the North Country Insurance Professionals was the top individual fundraiser with over $1,000.00 in donations.
