A Voice from the Eastern Door

Higher Education Day held at Salmon River

Salmon River Central School Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors started preparing for their future at the “Higher Education Day” College Fair held on Oct. 7. Many colleges and universities were represented, including local colleges such as Potsdam, Plattsburgh, and Clarkson University, as well as those as far as Cornell University and the University of Albany, and even the Armed Forces.

“This is a good opportunity for kids to start thinking about school, future and start planning it out,” said Toni Siddon, Guidance Counselor at Salmon River Central School.

Students also volunteered as student ambassadors during the event and were awarded “spirit points” for their class. Spirit Points are a friendly way to encourage school spirit among classes. Students could also collect “spirit points” by wearing a college t-shirt on the day of the college fair.

This year grade 10 students were invited to take part in the college fair. Grade 10 is a good time to begin exploring career interests and preparing high school transcripts, participating in community service activities, and joining other clubs and organizations that help students with their college applications. Not to mention working on maintaining good grades.

Once students reach grade 11 they should be preparing for college entrance exams. On Oct. 17, Salmon River Central School will hold the PSAT, a practice for the SAT required for college applications, free to their grade 11 students. The PSAT is a 4 hour long exam, registration begins at 7:30am and the test will be administered promptly at 7:45am. Students are expected to take the SAT and ACT in Jun., college visits in the summer, and attend open houses in the fall.

Senior year is when students make their final decisions about college. Already, approximately three quarters of the senior class have already begun filling out their applications. Applications need to be mailed by Dec. 1. After their acceptance, students begin working on financial aid and scholarships.
