The Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department held their third annual boot drive fundraiser on Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island) on Oct. 12 during the Thanksgiving/Columbus Day holiday. Thanksgiving is usually a busy travel time for Canadians looking to enjoy the long weekend. The money raised will help to cover in-house expenses as well as their largest expense the new fan boat located at station 2 which is used in water rescues. Scotia Bank was also a special part of the fundraiser helping with volunteering and agreeing to match up to $3,000.00 in proceeds.
“A special thank you to Scotia Bank again for helping, and CKON radio for donating the t-shirts that everybody wore at the crossroads,” said Tom Francis, HAVFD member, “and thanks to the community of Akwesasne and the surrounding communities for their support in the boot drive. We had a very successful year again.”
