A Voice from the Eastern Door

Haudenosaunee Confederacy News

-The Haudenosaunee Documentation Committee held a meeting on Saturday, October 10th at the Onondaga Nation.  The committee members discussed the Haudenosaunee ID cards, the MOA with Homeland Security and the Haudenosaunee passports.

1. The passport example requires a few minor changes and then goes to the Grand Council for final approval on November 14th.

2. The memorandum of agreement with the Homeland Security had some changes made to the document and will be returned to them.  This process seems to be moving smoothly with help of the Department of the Interior Mr. Larry Echohawk’s office.

3. Work continues on the Haudenosaunee passports and it looks like some positive things are happening with the passport issue.  Keep watching for further developments with the passports.

The Kariwiio continues at the Cold Springs (Allegheny) Longhouse this week with the last day of reciting on this Thursday, October 15.  The delegation then moves on to Six Nations territory to the Onondaga Longhouse starting Sunday, October 18th.

 The Cayuga Nation Profile:

The Cayuga Nation is member of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy.  The Cayugas were located in the area of what you would call the Finger Lakes.  Unfortunately for the Cayugas they lost their homeland after the Revolutionary War and had to leave and move in with the Senecas at Akron, Cattaraugus, and up into the 6 Nations area.

The Cayugas have been fighting to regain their homeland through the Cayuga land claims.  Their struggle has been long and hard to prove their land had been fraudulently purchased.  The Cayugas actually won their land claim case in the lower court only to have the decision reversed at the Supreme Court Level.  The Cayugas continue the fight with the help of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and legal advisors.

The Cayugas are a part of an historic event in the Haudenousaunee history. The Cayugas have a complete set of 10 condoled chiefs.  That is the number of chief titles given to the Cayugas by the Peacemaker.  This is a momentous event in the history of the Haudenosaunee.  This is testimony to his faith and belief in the Great Law of Peace.

The 10 condoled Chiefs are from 6 Nations and those Cayugas living at Cattaraugus and Akron.  We can work together to make the Confederacy stronger.
