The Akwesasne Peoples Fire held a raffle for an original, framed painting of a gustowa and rattle by Garry J. Meeches from Manitoba.
We would like to congratulate the winner: Karoniakwas Benedict-Cole. She is a 17-year-old senior at Salmon River High School.
“Niawen:kowa” to everyone who purchased tickets. The winning ticket was drawn by Marlene Kamel who graciously stopped at the tent to draw the ticket.
The original painting was done by Garry J. Meeches, an Ojibway from the Long Plain Band in Manitoba. He is self-taught and has been doing art work for 33 years. He works with different mediums such as acrylic on canvas, stone, wood, bone and paper. He is also a residential school survivor.
Nia:wen ko:wa to Garry for donating the artwork to the Akwesasne Peoples Fire.
If you are interested in viewing his work he can be reached at 647-282-5778.
